CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Only once the three fae females were well and truly gone did I whirl on Shiel, fury sharp on my tongue.
âWhat was that about?â
He was so accustomed to this sort of response from me, by now, that it didnât even phase him. His voice remained calm, his posture relaxed, though his eyes still watched to make sure the three fae females didnât decide to change their minds and make a hasty return.
âI didnât trust them,â he said, simplyâan answer that immediately drew from me a whistling huff of frustration as I threw my hands up in front of me.
âYou donât trust anybody.â
âI trust Zev and Finch,â Shiel said, nodding his head for a moment before he finally turned to look at me. âAnd believe it or not, I trust you.â
âBullshit.â
The word was out of my mouth before I even had the chance to think it.
I kept my gaze locked with Shielâs as I scrambled to my feet, waving away Zev and Finchâs arms reaching to help me despite nearly losing my footing on the slippery bank more than once as I did.
âWhat reason do you have to trust me?â I asked, still looking Shiel dead in the eye. âIsnât that why you just sent Vanya and the others away? You thought I was going to tell her something I shouldnât?â
âI sent those three fae away because theyâre trained in the art of getting you to say what you shouldnât,â he said, the outer corner of his mouth turning up slightly in disgust. âTheyâre a staple in every court, an unavoidable consequence of the natural jostle for power that occurs the moment a fae puts a crown on their head.â
Beside him, Finch wrinkled up his nose. âDonât even get me started on the crotch fleas.â
âI think youâre the only one who has any problem with thatâ¦Finch,â Zev said with a more than generous helping of disapproving side-eye.
âWhat weâre trying to say, Aurra,â Shiel said, his own disapproving glare making Finch shrink back a little, âis that it isnât about you slipping up and saying something you shouldnât on accident. It was about them digging it out of you against your will. Itâs happened to the very best of us at least once.â
âAnd some of us more than once,â Finch muttered.
I stuck my tongue in my cheek, thinking for a moment. âWhat are you really here for, Shiel?â I asked. âSurely Zev and Finch could have shooed off the busybodies, you know, since they trust you so much.â
âIâm here because I saw my opportunity,â Shiel said, simply.
âTo?â
âTo try and win back your trust,â he said, after a moment, his words finally hesitating a little. âBy giving it, first.â
âWhatââ
âI was wrong, Aurra,â he said, stepping forward ever so slightly. I didnât step back this time. I let him take another step, and then another, until he was standing so close I could smell the warm scent of him fill the narrow space between us. âI should never have kept my title from you.
